Daw

DawGeyw

When you first meet Daw, she is quiet and reserved. She usually sits in the back of class and listens silently, maybe exchanging a few words with the other artisans here and there. But when her face lights up at a funny joke or a silly comment, you know there is more to Daw than pure reservation.

Daw is a member of the Karen Hill Tribe and has been in Austin since 2010. Daw lives with her two teenage sons and her mother, Sa. It seems there is a constant influx of visitors and temporary guests at Daw’s apartment. These guests always are at ease around Daw and her gift for hospitality is apparent.  Together, Daw and Sa weave at home. Daw is always eager for work, and currently receives income solely from the bags and scarves she weaves for Hill Country Hill Tribers. You can read more about Daw and Sa’s journey to the United States in this blog post.

If you own one of Daw’s products (or simply want to send a message), please feel free to write her a note in the comments below. We will share them with her. Eventually, we’d like every artisan to be able to write you back on her own.
